Horst Wessel became a Nazi martyr through fascist propaganda that mythologized his death to serve the party's ideological goals.

In 1929 Horst Wessel wrote a song that later became the anthem of the Nazi Party. The song glorifies the Nazi movement and portrays Nazis as heroic patriots, ready to sacrifice their lives for the cause.
It emphasizes themes of martyrdom, struggle, unity, militant nationalism, and the Nazis’ fight against their perceived enemies: Communists and Jews.
The lyrics portray the Nazis as a revolutionary movement marching toward a glorious new German future, to make Germany great again.
The song became a central piece of Nazi propaganda and was often performed at party rallies and official events.
Wessel was shot in January 1930 in Berlin during a personal fight with Albrecht Höhler, who happened to be a member of the Communist Party (KPD).
The shooting was reportedly connected to a personal dispute, possibly involving Wessel's relationship with a former prostitute.
But the Nazis pretended that his death was a deliberate political assassination by Communist enemies.
Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda chief, seized the opportunity to turn Wessel into a martyr for the Nazi cause.
Goebbels portrayed Wessel as a selfless hero murdered by Communist thugs for his beliefs.

His funeral was staged as a grand spectacle, complete with Nazi symbolism, SA parades, and public mourning.
Then the Horst Wessel Lied became the official anthem of the Nazi Party, and Wessel was idolized in posters, literature, and films. His name was used to inspire loyalty and sacrifice, especially among Hitler Youth and SA members.
Horst Wessel's transformation into a Nazi martyr was not due to the actual circumstances of his death, but rather the deliberate propaganda efforts of the Nazi Party.
They constructed a legend around him to serve their political goals, turning a local street fight into a symbol of ideological warfare. The Nazis used the song to portray Horst Wessel as a martyr who died for the Nazi cause.
This glorification of death for the "movement" normalized violence and self-sacrifice, preparing Germans, especially youth and SA/SS members, to accept and commit atrocities for a "higher cause."
Right now we’re witnessing MAGA Nazis turn Charlie Kirk into a martyr for their cause. His funeral will also be a grand spectacle.
And you can be certain that the MAGA Nazis will continue to follow in Hitler’s footsteps. They will continue to use Kirk’s death as a justification for their atrocities against innocent immigrants, liberals, LGBTQ and Democrats.
Just like the German Nazis used Horst Wessel’s death.
